BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Ferris State tipped in a missed shot with 0.3 seconds left to escape with a 70-68 win over Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team Thursday night in GLIAC play.
The Panthers (4-2, 0-1 GLIAC) had wiped out a 12 point second half deficit and led 67-63 with just over a minute when Ferris (5-1, 1-0 GLIAC) hit a long three to make it 67-66. Junior Shemar Waugh (Columbus, Ohio) sank a free throw with 59.1 seconds left to make it 68-66, but two Ferris free throws with 50 seconds left tied it at 68.
ODU missed a shot on its end, and the Bulldogs tipped in a missed shot just before the buzzer sounded to take the win.
Freshman Hasan Varence (Queens, N.Y.) led the Panthers with 16 points, while junior Ronnie Williams (Columbus, Ohio) added 13 points. Junior Mike DeLeon (Powell, Ohio) added 11 points with eight rebounds and freshman Sam Hickey (Toledo, Ohio) scored 10 points off the bench. Waugh finished with eight assists.
ODU led virtually the entire first half, taking a 16-8 advantage on a triple by Williams, its biggest margin of the game. Consecutive layups by Williams and freshman Ryan Hoyng (Celina, Ohio) kept the Panthers on top 32-26 late in the half and the Panthers took a 32-29 lead into intermission.
Williams buried a three-pointer to keep ODU in front 42-36 with 16:23 to play, but the Bulldogs countered with a 21-3 burst over the next six minutes to take their biggest lead at 57-45 with just over 10 minutes left.
A pair of triples by Hickey closed the deficit to 57-55, and Varence drilled three from straight on to put ODU back in front 60-59 with 6:30 left, capping a 15-2 run.
ODU trailed 63-60 with 5:02 left, but scored the next seven points to go in front 67-63 with 2:11 left.
Ohio Dominican remains on the road to take on Grand Valley State at 7 p.m. Saturday.
