COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team shot 59.6 percent from the field and 52 percent from three-point range en route to a 96-73 win over Seton Hill on Tuesday night at Alumni Hall.
The Panthers (2-0, 0-0 GLIAC) are averaging 91 points per game in their first two contests to begin the season and are averaging 93 points per contest in their last four games dating back to last season. ODU has held a distinct advantage in the second half to begin the year, outscoring its opponents 95-59 in the second half through two contests.
ODU held a 35-31 edge in rebounding and held Seton Hill (1-1, 0-0 PSAC) to 23.8 percent (5-of-21) shooting from three-point range. The Panthers recorded 21 assists on 34 made field goals and recorded 38 bench points as a team.
Junior Ronnie Williams (Columbus, Ohio) led the Panthers with 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field, going 2-of-4 from behind the arc while also dishing out five assists. Junior Shemar Waugh (Columbus, Ohio) scored a career-high 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting while also leading the team with seven assists.
Sophomore Ben Casanova (Sylvania, Ohio) scored 10 points off the bench and pulled down a team-high eight assists. Freshman Hasan Varence (Queens, New York) scored nine points on 4-of-4 shooting in 14 minutes, while sophomore Michael Simon (Hilliard, Ohio) dropped nine points and went 3-of-8 from three-point range off the bench for Ohio Dominican.
The Panthers trailed 5-0 at the 18:39 mark of the first half when Varence caught an alley-oop pass from Waugh to throw down a thunderous right handed dunk, sparking a 7-2 run for Ohio Dominican, which was tied with the Griffins at 7-7 with 17:25 left in the half.
Leading 21-17 with 12:08 remaining in the half, Casanova drove the lane for a layup that sparked a 21-10 run for the Panthers, who saw the apex of the run come at the 6:52 mark with a basket by Waugh to give ODU a 40-27 lead. The Panthers led 48-42 at halftime.
The Panthers wasted no time stretching their lead coming out of the locker room. Williams connected on a three-pointer to push the advantage to 51-42, then just 1:18 later, Varence hit a three-point shot of his own to give ODU a 54-44 lead at the 18:52 mark of the second half.
The Panthers outscored the Griffins 48-31 in the second half, leading by as much as 25 points after a jump shot by freshman Ryan Hoyng (Celina, Ohio) with 6:23 to go to give ODU an 89-64 lead. Overall, 11 Panthers scored with 13 players seeing the floor in the 96-73 victory.
Ohio Dominican will look for a 3-0 start to the season when it faces St. Joseph's (Ind.) on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Alumni Hall.
