BAY CITY, Mich. — Ohio Dominican's men's basketball team was picked to finish sixth in the GLIAC south division in 2016-17 in a preseason poll conducted by the conference's coaches.
The Panthers, who are coming off their winningest season since 2008-09 under fourth-year head coach Dan Evans, accrued 11 points in the poll to place sixth. ODU finished 11-17 (8-14 GLIAC) in 2015-16, and has improved its win total in each of the last three seasons under Evans.
Ohio Dominican ranked seventh in the conference in scoring in the 2015-16 season, averaging 76.8 points per game. The Panthers held a distinct home court advantage, ending the year with an 8-4 record at Alumni Hall on 85.5 points per game.
The Panthers return four starters from a year ago, including junior Ronnie Williams (Columbus, Ohio), who finished second on the team in scoring last year, averaging 13.1 points per game on 38 percent shooting from three-point range. Williams shot 85.5 percent from the free throw line in 2015-16, the second-highest free-throw shooting percentage in a season in the history of Ohio Dominican men's basketball.
Also returning is junior Mike DeLeon (Powell, Ohio), who ranked fourth on the team in scoring (8.8 ppg) and second in rebounding (6.3 ppg) a year ago. Junior Adam Cytlak (Van Buren, Ohio) returns after averaging 6.1 points per game in 27 starts last season, and junior Shemar Waugh (Columbus, Ohio) returns after leading the squad in assists per game (3.6) in 2015-16.
Sophomore Michael Simon (Hilliard, Ohio) will look to expand his role from a season ago, shooting 43.7 percent from three-point range (31 of 71) to record the second-most prolific three-point shooting season in ODU men's basketball history.
ODU will play 13 games at Alumni Hall this year, including five in the month of January, and will begin the 2016-17 regular season at Johnson C. Smith on Saturday, November 12. Ohio Dominican will play its first exhibition game of the season at Toledo on Saturday, November 5, with tipoff slated for 2:30 p.m.
