COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio Dominican men's basketball team dropped a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup to Ashland University on Thursday night, 82-70.
The loss drops the Panthers to 5-19 on the season and 3-17 in conference play. The Eagles picked up their 10th win of the season, improving to 10-14 overall and 7-13 in the GLIAC.
ODU had an overall nice shooting performance, shooting 24-of-50 from the field (48%) and going 20-of-25 (80%) from the foul line for the game.
The Panthers got off to a hot start, making four of their first six shots as they led the Eagles 11-2 with 14:07 remaining in the first half. The Eagles, though, used a 12-2 run to take the lead 14-13 with 10:39 remaining in the opening half.
The game stayed close with Ashland holding the lead for about seven minutes until a free throw from Nelson tied the game 27-27 with 3:13 left before the half. However, Ashland carried the momentum into halftime as they outscored ODU 8-3 in the final three minutes of the half to take a 36-30 lead.
Coming out of the locker rooms, both teams came out firing as the Panthers outscored the Eagles 10-9 over the first four minutes to cut the deficit to 45-40 with 16:00 remaining. ODU then found themselves on the wrong side of a 5-0 run giving Ashland a 50-40 lead with 15:04 left in the game.
After the run, Ashland was able to control the game holding a double digit lead for most of the second half. With 3:51 remaining, the Eagles took their largest lead of the game, thirteen points, giving them a 70-57 lead. The Panthers were unable to cut the deficit to lower than eight points down the stretch.
ODU will host Lake Erie College in their last home game of the season this Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014. The Panthers will look to even the season series with the Storm who won the first game 89-85. Tip-off will be at 3 p.m in Alumni Hall.
