HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The Ohio Dominican men's basketball team started the New Year with a 71-57 loss to Michigan Tech Thursday evening in the SDC Gymnasium.
The Panthers (3-6; 1-4 GLIAC) scored the first points of the game after a basket from sophomore Mark Minch (West Chester, Ohio), but were quickly looking at a five point deficit after the Huskies (7-2; 3-2 ) scored the next seven points for a 7-2 lead.
Ohio Dominican quickly responded with their own 12-0 run for a 14-7 lead at the 11:24 mark after a freshman Melran Leach (Shaker Heights, Ohio) 3-pointer.
Michigan Tech regained the lead, 19-18 with 5:53 remaining in the period and extended its lead to 22-18 two minutes later on a Jordan Chartier basket.
The Huskies used the remaining minutes to go on a 8-2 run to head into the half with an eight point lead, 30-22.
The Panthers shot just 34.8 percent from the field on a 8-of-23 shooting clip while the Huskies were 12-of-28 (42.9 percent) in the first half.
After the intermission, the Huskies used an early 11-8 run to take a 41-28 at the under-15 media timeout.
From there, Michigan Tech dominated the remainder of the half, only allowing the Panthers to be as close as nine at the 4:09 mark after a Carr 3-pointer. ODU could not close the gap, and fell to the Huskies by the final score of 71-57.
Leach led all Panthers in scoring, recording game-high 14 points to go along with his two steals. Carr added 10 points and four rebounds while sophomore Trent Weaver (Hilliard, Ohio) had nine points and eight rebounds.
Ohio Dominican resumes play at Northern Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 4 for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
