COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Dominican men's basketball team moved to 2-0 for the 2013-14 campaign, after posting a 77-64 home victory over the Bluefield State Blues on Thursday, Nov. 14.
The Panthers built a 39-27 lead at the break after going on a 20-8 run to close out the first half.
Ohio Dominican shot 57.1 percent from the field, connecting on 16-of-28 from the floor in the first half. ODU was also 2-of-4 from behind the three-point line for 50 percent. They also held a 21-15 advantage on the board and held the Blues (1-2) to a mere 35.3 percent (12-of-34) shooting clip.
Sophomore Trent Weaver (Hilliard, Ohio) gave the Panthers a 41-27 lead after the break but Bluefield State came back on a 18-8 to cut the lead to five, 49-45 with 10:43 left to play in the game.
ODU went on another big run of 19-2 run over the next five minutes to extend its lead to 68-47 and maintained that lead to the end of the game where the Panthers won by the margin of 13.
Sophomore Mark Minch (West Chester, Ohio) followed up his Tuesday night performance of 31 points with 21, while adding three rebounds and four steals.
Weaver posted his second double-double of the year with 16 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks.
Sophomore Chad Nelson (Columbus, Ohio) had 14 points, a career-high seven assists and five rebounds. Senior Brandon Carr (Chicago, Ill.) was the fourth Panther in double digits, scoring 10 off the bench and added six boards, two assists and three steals.
As a team, the Panthers shot 54.5 percent from the floor of 30-of-55 shooting.
Ohio Dominican will have a couple of days to recoup, next playing on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at Salem International (W. Va.). Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
