Russell Tabbed As D2Football.com All-American

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Senior quarterback Grant Russell (Newark, Ohio) was named an Honorable Mention All-American by D2Football.com, the organization announced Friday.

Russell finished the season leading all Division II quarterbacks in completion percentage (72.5 percent) and passing efficiency (190.6). His completion percentage is tied for the highest by a Division II quarterback since 2013 (Trevor Adams, Northwest Missouri State) and his passing efficiency is the seventh-highest in a season by a Division II quarterback all-time.

His 318.2 passing yards per game ranked fifth in Division II this season, and his 10.4 yards per pass attempt were second. Russell averaged 327.8 yards of total offense per game, which was seventh in the nation, and he was responsible for 21.6 points per game, the fourth-best mark in the country.

Despite playing just 10 games, Russell finished 10th in the country in passing touchdowns with 30 and was 11th in total passing yards (3,182). He also was in the top-20 nationally in yards per completion (14.4, 15th) and completions per game (22.1, 17th).

For his career, Russell completed 700-of-1,022 passes (68.5 percent) for 8,729 yards and 73 touchdowns against just 20 interceptions for a passing efficiency of 159.9, which is tied for the 18th best efficiency rating by a Division II quarterback all-time. His career completion percentage is fourth-best among active quarterbacks at any level and tops amongst Division II quarterbacks.

A Harlon Hill Trophy candidate the past two years, Russell was named the G-MAC Player of the Year this fall in helping the Panthers claim the conference title and finish with a 7-3 record. He picked up a pair of G-MAC Player of the Week awards and had six 300-yard games this season.
