ELKINS, W. Va. – After winning the opener 13-4, Ohio Dominican's baseball team couldn't take that momentum into game two and suffered a 4-3 setback to Davis & Elkins in a G-MAC doubleheader Friday.
In game one, the Panthers strung together a trio of three-run innings in the opener to break the game open as ODU led 9-0 through four frames. Senior Chris Sackett (Loveland, Ohio) and freshman Manny Vorhees (Wapakoneta, Ohio) had RBI singles in the second, two wild pitches and a Sackett sac fly accounted for the third inning runs, and a two-run single by junior Joey Machuga (Canfield, Ohio) and an RBI basehit by freshman Michael Lang (Cincinnati, Ohio) closed the scoring in the fourth.
That was more than enough help for senior Mitchell Bault (Mason, Ohio), who tossed 8.0 innings and surrendered just three hits and one run. He struck out four, walked one, and needed just 88 pitches (62 strikes) in his outing.
In the second game, ODU was limited to six hits and found itself down 4-1 in the sixth. Machuga and freshman Thomas Staab (Bellville, Ohio) each had RBI singles to close the gap to 4-3, but ODU left the bases loaded, then stranded the tying run in the seventh to end it.
Senior Garret Sendelbach (Tiffin, Ohio) allowed three earned runs and struck out four in 6.0 innings.
Zeller and Staab each had two hits for ODU.
Ohio Dominican and D&E will close out their series with a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday.
