COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican senior first baseman Justin Childers (Pickerington, Ohio) was selected in the 33rd round of the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft by the Detroit Tigers, becoming the second Panther selected Wednesday alongside teammate Brad Wilson (Alexandria, Ohio).
This is the third time since 2004 that ODU has seen teammates selected in the same draft as Wilson was taken in the 13th round by the Toronto Blue Jays earlier today.
Childers becomes the 13th Ohio Dominican baseball player drafted as he capped off a terrific career for the Panthers by repeating as the D2CCA Midwest Region Player of the Year and earning a pair of All-American honors this spring.
The 6-2, 205 pound senior played in 195 games in his career, hitting .375 with 35 homers, 52 doubles and 13 triples, scoring 213 runs and driving in 170. He also drew 111 walks to help account for a .468 lifetime OBP while also slugging .640 for the Panthers.
After batting .327 with eight homers as a sophomore, Childers broke through as a junior, being named the consensus Midwest Region Player of the Year as he batted a Division II-best .451 with 14 homers, 17 doubles, five triples, 60 RBIs while stealing 18 bases. He topped Division II with an .846 slugging percentage and registered a .526 OBP on the season, which was fifth in the country, en route to being named a finalist for the Tino Martinez Award as the best Division II player. He was also a consensus Second Team All-American in 2017.
Childers followed that with a senior season in which he batted .407 and drew 45 walks to see his OBP climb to .540, while still slugging .786 on the spring. He hit 13 homers, 20 doubles and five triples while scoring 76 runs in 50 games and driving in 48.
He batted .478 with five homers and 18 RBIs, along with 17 walks, in 18 games in the month of March (.600 OBP, .940 slugging), then batted .511 with a .617 OBP in 13 games in April as well.
Childers was named the GLIAC Player of the Year in 2017 and the G-MAC Player of the Year this spring, and picked up Academic All-American honors in both seasons as well.
Ohio Dominican concluded the 2018 season with a record of 36-17. The Panthers were ranked as high as No. 15 in the nation and reached the championship round of the NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament.
