ASHLAND, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's baseball team had a 12-8 lead entering the bottom of the eighth, but Ashland rallied for five runs to take a 13-12 non-conference win on Wednesday.
Ohio Dominican, ranked No. 17 in the nation and No. 4 in the NCAA Midwest Regional Rankings released earlier today, slipped to 30-12. The Eagles, ranked No. 7 in the Midwest, moved to 27-17 as the teams split their two games this season.
ODU banged out 16 hits in the game, but committed two errors while its pitching staff walked eight in the contest.
The Panthers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on solo homers by senior Justin Childers (Pickerington, Ohio) and junior Chis Sackett (Loveland, Ohio), but the Eagles answered back with three runs in the bottom.
A four-run third inning staked the Panthers to a 6-3 lead. Sackett had a sac fly, and RBI singles by seniors Max Banke (Oakwood, Ohio) and Cody Paterniti (Chardon, Ohio) and junior Brad Hull (Gahanna, Ohio) put the Panthers in front.
Ashland struck back with three unearned runs in the fifth to even the game, but the Panthers responded. Childers doubled to right-center to score two runs in the sixth, and Hull hit a two-run homer to left, the first of his career, to make it 10-6 in the seventh.
The Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to draw within 10-8 before senior Jake Collinsworth (Cincinnati, Ohio) responded with a two-run single of his own to push the lead back out to four runs in the eighth.
However, the Eagles answered with their five-run eighth, with four of the runs coming with two outs. The Panthers put the tying run on base in the ninth but could not score.
Hull and Sackett each had three hits, while Childers and sophomore Joey Machuga (Canfield, Ohio) each had two hits with a walk. Collinsworth finished two hits as well.
Ohio Dominican will travel to Findlay for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Friday.
