No. 16 Baseball Tallies 28 Runs, Takes Two From Lake Erie

EASTLAKE, Ohio — With 28 runs on 28 hits for the day, Ohio Dominican's baseball team cruised to its 13th and 14th wins in its last 15 tries, defeating Lake Erie by final scores of 15-4 and 13-1 on Sunday in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference doubleheader at Classic Park.

The 16th-ranked Panthers (22-5, 11-1 G-MAC) have won 17 games since March 3 and have scored 10 runs or more in 15 out of 27 games thus far.

The Panthers jumped out quickly in the opener, with senior Justin Childers (Pickerington, Ohio) singling and junior Colin Kaucher (Toledo, Ohio) drawing a walk to start the game. After a groundout advanced both, junior Chris Sackett (Loveland, Ohio) smacked a two-run single to right to put ODU on the board, then scored himself via two passed balls.

Leading 3-1 heading to the second, ODU tacked on another run as senior Cody Paterniti (Chardon, Ohio) singled, went to third on a failed pickoff throw, then came in on an RBI single by junior Brad Hull (Gahanna, Ohio) down the right field line.

ODU tacked on three more runs in the third inning on a sac fly by senior Max Banke (Oakwood, Ohio), while junior Jace Komminsk (Westerville, Ohio) and Sackett each scored on wild pitches. The Panthers bumped the lead to 9-1 in the fourth inning as Kaucher scored on a passed ball and Sackett came in on Banke's RBI grounder.

Lake Erie drew within 9-4 in the bottom of the inning, but ODU pulled away. Childers had an RBI single in the fifth inning, and ODU scored three more times in the sixth, including on another wild pitch and a passed ball, to go in front 13-4.

ODU capped its scoring in the ninth with Kaucher's RBI single and a sac fly by sophomore Jonathan Conkle (Massillon, Ohio).

Six Panthers had two hits in the game – Sackett, Childers, Paterniti, Kaucher, sophomore Joey Machuga (Canfield, Ohio) and Hull. Banke knocked in three while Sackett had a pair of RBIs and Childers drew two walks.

Junior Mitchell Bault (Maineville, Ohio) picked up the victory, tossing 7.0 innings and punching out six. He improved to 4-1 on the season and this is the fifth start that he worked at least six innings this spring.

In game two, the Panthers used 15 hits to score 13 runs while limiting the Storm to just one runs on four hits. Redshirt Junior pitcher Joe Filosa (Fort Wayne, Indiana) picked up his third win of the year, going 6.0 innings and recording nine strikeouts. It's the third time this season that Filosa has struck out nine or more batters in a single game.

Paterniti finished a perfect 3-for-3 while also drawing two walks. Hull notched four RBIs in the contest, going 2-for-5 at the plate. Childers finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Kaucher notched a two-RBI triple.

The scoring started for the Panthers in the top of the second when Hull doubled to left center to score Paterniti and Banke to put ODU on the board, 2-0. A throwing error later in the inning allowed Childers and Hull to score and increase the advantage to 4-0.

Lake Erie scored one in the bottom of the fourth to cut its deficit to 4-1, but Ohio Dominican responded with five runs in the top of the fifth. Back-to-back singles by Paterniti and Banke put runners on first and second, then junior Noah Bland (Oberlin, Ohio) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Childers delivered a two-RBI single in the next at bat, pushing the lead to 6-1. Kaucher tripled in the next at bat to score Bland and Childers, then a single to the shortstop by Machuga brought Kaucher home to make the lead 9-1. The Panthers tacked on four runs in the top of the seventh for good measure, and senior Matt Meihls (Fort Wayne, Indiana) finished the seventh with three strikeouts on the mound, shutting the door on Lake Erie, 13-1.

ODU will return to Classic Park on Wednesday to finish off the three-game series with the Storm. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
