INDIANAPOLIS – After a monster week at the plate helped propel No. 18 Ohio Dominican to a 6-0 record, senior first baseman Justin Childers (Pickerington, Ohio) was named the G-MAC North Division Player of the Week on Monday.
Childers batted .591 (13-for-22) with three homers, three doubles, a triple and eight RBIs on the week. He also scored 12 runs, drew five walks, and was hit by three pitches. Those numbers were good for a 1.227 slugging percentage and a .700 on-base percentage, and he was also perfect in 60 chances in the field as well.
Now riding a 10-game hitting streak, Childers tallied five multi-hit games and three multi-RBI games in doubleheader sweeps against Cedarville, Davis & Elkins and Alderson Broaddus. He had at least one extra-base hit in four contests and a pair of extra hits in three games, and homered once against all three opponents while also drawing a walk in five of six games.
The 2017 consensus All-American is now atop the conference in on-base percentage (.560), slugging (.813), runs (41), walks (23) while being tied with teammate Colin Kaucher (Toledo, Ohio) for first with three triples. He also ranks third in the league in batting average (.413).
Heading into last weekend's games, Childers led the nation in runs scored per game (1.74), was 13th in walks per game (1.05), 22nd in triples and 34th in OBP.
Overall, he's reached base in 16 straight games, has 10 multi-hit games and seven multi-RBI games for the 19-4 Panthers, who are also 8-0 in the conference.
This is the second time he's won the award in 2018.
Ohio Dominican will take on Trevecca Nazarene in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Thursday in Panther Valley.
