CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – A two-out RBI single in the eighth inning by junior Colin Kaucher (Toledo, Ohio) proved to be the difference as Ohio Dominican's baseball team earned a 5-4 win over Wayne State on Sunday to take the series.
Junior Brad Hull (Gahanna, Ohio) was hit by a pitch with one out and went to second on a wild pitch. Kaucher's base hit to right field brought him home, and junior Brad Wilson (Alexandria, Ohio) shut the door on the Warriors in a perfect ninth inning, fanning the final two hitters.
The Panthers took two out of three from Wayne State this weekend to improve to 7-3 on the year, while WSU is now 4-4.
Kaucher finished 3-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs and junior Max Banke (Oakwood, Ohio) finished 2-for-3, and the Panthers received excellent work out of the bullpen by Wilson and senior Dustin Cowart (Hoover, Ala.).
Cowart struck out five and allowed just one hit in his 2.2 innings to bridge the gap to Wilson, who entered in the eighth inning and struck out four of the six hitters he faced. Wilson threw 17 of his 20 pitches for strikes in picking up the win.
The Warriors scored in the top of the first inning on a two-run double, but ODU answered with three runs in the bottom half. Kaucher had an RBI single, junior Noah Bland (Oberlin, Ohio) hit a sacrifice fly, and junior Chris Sackett (Loveland, Ohio) followed with an RBI single to put ODU in front.
Wayne State evened the game in the third, then took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth. Freshman Tim Zeller (Mount Vernon, Ohio) delivered in the bottom of the inning though, as his RBI single scored junior Jace Komminsk (Westerville, Ohio) to tie the game at 4-4.
The Panthers will travel to Florence, S.C. for five games from Saturday, March 10 – Tuesday, March 13, getting started with a 3 p.m. contest against Fairmont State on Saturday.
