COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican baseball juniors Justin Childers (Pickerington, Ohio) and Lee Sponseller (Mason, Ohio) were each named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team in voting conducted by the region's sports information directors and are now eligible for Academic All-American honors.
Childers, a Finance and Economics major, carries a 3.53 GPA. He's had a prolific spring at the plate, hitting .441 with 11 homers and 50 RBIs, to go along with 54 runs scored, 16 doubles, four triples and 15 stolen bases. Childers leads the league in RBIs, on-base percentage (.516) and slugging (.795), as well as total bases.
His batting average is second in the conference, as are his runs scored, triples and walks (27). He ranks third in hits (71) and steals, fifth in homers and seventh in doubles.
The reigning GLIAC Player of the Week, Childers has 25 multi-hit games and 16 multi-RBI games in 44 contests this spring. He has currently hit in 10 straight games, and has at least two hits in nine of those games.
This is the second time Sponseller has earned Academic All-District honors, as he also earned that award, along with Academic All-American distinction, in 2015. Sponseller is also a Finance and Economics major and carries a 3.68 GPA.
On the season, he is batting .345 with 12 homers and 35 RBIs along with 10 doubles and seven stolen bases. Sponseller leads the GLIAC with 37 walks, ranks third in homers, fifth in slugging (.655) and seventh in on-base percentage (.476). In GLIAC only games, he has an .837 slugging percentage, which is best in the league, and his .512 OBP is third.
He has 13 multi-hit games this year and 11 multi-RBI games.
