BAY CITY, Mich. – For the fifth time in his career and first time this spring, junior Lee Sponseller (Mason, Ohio) was selected as the GLIAC Baseball Player of the Week.
Sponseller helped the Panthers to a 6-2 record last week by hitting .481 with three homers, six RBIs and a .600 on-base percentage. He drew eight walks and slugged .815 on the week.
The Panther left fielder had a hit in all eight games for the Panthers and was instrumental in helping ODU sweep a four game weekend series against Findlay, hitting .643 with three homers and six knocked in. He had at least two hits in all four games.
In 22 GLIAC games, Sponseller is hitting .467 with a .582 OBP and a .987 slugging percentage. He has 11 home runs, 28 RBIs, 20 walks and six doubles in those games while scoring 25 runs. In 17 games this month, he is batting .492 with 10 home runs and 25 RBIs with a .580 OBP and a 1.046 slugging percentage.
Sponseller earned two GLIAC Player of the Week nods in 2015 and two in 2016. This spring, he leads the league in walks (34), is second in OBP (.513) and slugging (.713), third in home runs (11) and 10th in batting average (.377).
Ohio Dominican will take on Malone in a non-conference doubleheader starting at noon on Wednesday at Thurman Munson Stadium.
