COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Dominican's offense broke out of its early-season slump by pounding out 30 hits today, recovering from an 8-7 setback in 11 innings to Winona State by defeating Lewis 5-1 in the nightcap.
Sophomore Marcus Schluessler (Zanesville, Ohio) finished with seven hits in nine at bats and drove in four runs, classmate Phil Jaskot (Upper Arlington, Ohio) had five hits and sophomore Kevin Lydic (Dublin, Ohio) and junior Jossue Delgado (Barinas, Venezuela) each tallied four hits to lead the Panther offensive attack.
Meanwhile, senior Nick Venditti (Brecksville, Ohio) was sharp on the mound in the win over Lewis, tossing six innings of four-hit baseball, yielding just one unearned run. He was followed in relief by sophomores Alberto Canales (West Park, Fla.) and Vince Bartolone (Broadview Heights, Ohio), who allowed just two hits in three scoreless innings.
ODU (3-9) took a 1-0 lead over Lewis (4-1) in the third, as Jaskot and Lydic singled to begin the inning, and Schluessler later singled to knock in Jaskot.
Junior Bryan Rudolph (Pickerington, Ohio) had an RBI single in the fourth to score sophomore Kyle Tisdale (Uniontown, Ohio), but Lewis answered with an unearned run in the fifth. ODU came right back in the bottom half of the inning, though, as Delgado had an RBI basehit to plate Schluessler to give the Panthers a 3-1 lead.
The Panthers tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh as Schluessler had an RBI double and senior Ryan Rovnak (Poland, Ohio) delivered a run-scoring single.
Venditti fanned four while improving to 2-1 on the spring. Canales, meanwhile, lowered his ERA to 1.50 in three outings this spring.
Schluessler and Jaskot each had three hits in the win, while Lydic had a pair of hits as well.
In the opener, ODU fought back from a 5-0 deficit against Winona State (5-4) but could not complete the rally as they fell in extra innings for the third time this week.
The Panthers scored twice in the fifth to cut it to 5-2, as freshman Jacob Horsley (Thornville, Ohio) delivered his first collegiate RBI with a basehit and Schluessler followed with another RBI single. ODU had a chance to tack on more, but lined into a double play to end the inning.
But ODU came back with a three-run inning in the sixth to knot the game. Freshman Collin Parcher (Napoleon, Ohio) knocked in Tisdale and Delgado with a basehit, and Horsley had an RBI single to bring in Parcher to tie it at five.
Winona State answered with two runs in the eighth, but again the Panthers had a response. Lydic singled and Horsley doubled to begin the frame, and Schluessler singled to score Lydic. Later, Rovnak drove home Horsley with a baseknock that tied it at seven.
ODU threatened to win in the 10th inning, putting a runner on third with two outs, but a groundout ended the inning.
WSU then put up a run in the 11th with two outs, and the Panthers couldn't answer in the bottom half as a caught stealing attempt quelled a scoring threat.
Schluessler had four hits in the opener, while Delgado and Horsley each had three hits. Rovnak, Jaskot and Lydic each had a pair of hits.
Senior Alex Borgan (Pickerington, Ohio) started and worked five innings, allowing three earned runs. Bartolone took the loss, yielding one unearned in 3.1 innings while punching out five.
Ohio Dominican returns to action at 3 p.m. Friday against Minnesota State-Mankato.
