Softball Sweeps Grand Valley State
Ohio Dominican's softball team notched two victories over Grand Valley State on Friday, March 24, 2017 in its first two GLIAC contests of the 2017 season.
The Panthers stormed back in the first game of the day to rally for a 5-4 (8 inn.) win and held the Laker offense in check in a 3-2 victory in game two.
Ohio Dominican was the only GLIAC opponent to sweep GVSU and just nine days after falling to the Panthers on March 24, Grand Valley began a 20-game win streak on April 2 that powered the Lakers to a GLIAC softball regular season championship.
But in their final season in the GLIAC before moving to the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, the Panthers used timely hitting and solid defensive play to finish unblemished in 2017 against Grand Valley. Trailing 4-2 in the first game of the doubleheader in the bottom of the seventh with one out, Kelly Wallace blasted a two-run home run to left field, tying the game at 4-4. In the bottom of the eighth, Landry Slider earned a walk to reach first base to lead off the inning. Then in the next at bat, Taylor Farmer singled on a bunt to advance Slider to second with no outs. Two batters later with one out, Taylor Kline delivered, singling through the left side to score Slider and earn the walk-off victory for Ohio Dominican, 5-4.
In game two, ODU held Grand Valley to just two runs on six hits while using nine hits to earn a 3-2 win. The Panthers trailed 1-0 until the top of the fourth, when a sacrifice fly by Kelly Mix scored Casey Murdoch to tie the game at 1-1. In the next at bat, Slider singled down the left field line to score Maria Simmonds, giving Ohio Dominican a 2-1 lead. ODU scored in the top of the sixth on a fielder's choice to extend its advantage to 3-1 and held GVSU to just one more run for the remainder of the game, earning the win, 3-2.
ODU finished 27-22 (14-8 GLIAC) in 2017, earning the Panthers a fourth-place finish in the GLIAC and a trip to the conference tournament for the first time since 2014.
